Today's news and decisions by the Leeds Trades Union Council Delegate Meeting

The Leeds Trades Union Council heard today from Michael Parkinson from Unison speaking about The Big NHS Birthday Gala which will take place at Millennium Square, Leeds on Saturday 29 June 2013 between 11am to 3pm.

Michael stated that the event will celebrate the NHS to lift the morale of workers within the NHS and to counter the continual negative press stories about the NHS.

Michael highlighted the importance of celebrating the achievements of the NHS, encouraging people to support the NHS and defend it from privatisation.

Leeds Trades Union Council agreed to publicise the event among the city's trade union members and to staff a stall at the event.

The Leeds Trades Union Council also heard a report from the Leeds Against The Cuts group about the following:

The national crown post office strike by the Communications Workers Union was reported to have been very successful yesterday on 28 May 2013 in Leeds.

A Leeds rally has been organised for the joint Department of Work and Pensions / Revenue and Customs strike action organised by the Public and Commercial Services Union for Monday 03 June 2013 in the North East and Yorkshire and Humberside region.

The meeting also heard about the National Day of Action on the Bedroom Tax to lobby your local councillor. Leeds Hands Off Our Homes is trying to get as many people who are being affected by te bedroom tax to take part in this on Saturday 01 June 013 and further details can be found here:


On 07 and 22 June 2013 the Leeds Ambulance workers who are Unite members will go on strike for 24 hours against the proposed £46 million of cuts over the next 5 years to front line health services in Leeds and to reduce skilled ambulance workers from 2 to 1.

The Leeds Trade Union Council agreed to support the Unite Ambulance workers, their struggle to beat the NHS cuts and to invite a speaker from the Unite ambulance workers to speak at the next Leeds Trades Union Council delegate meeting.

It was also reported that the estimated 2,500 Unison members at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust had voted by a 76% majority for strike action in the dispute over cuts, compulsory redundancies and pay cuts at the trusts hospitals.
